" SHOULD The Good Soldiers Just Fade
Away ?"
This kind of brainwashing has been going on for the millennia. Somewhere, the cause-de-calibre is the 'Nation' and somewhere else, it is the religion. Young people are made ready to blow themselves up because they get convinced about this as their religious calling. Whatever be the reason, it was always a 'Supreme Sacrifice' when someone died on the battlefield.
But what about those who survive and live through all the mayhem that they may have gone through during their service career?
These survivors were always advised to fade away because their value system was different from the one prevailing in the society.
Why are the relatively younger lot retiring from the Forces not taken into the Armed Constabulary? It was purely based on the objections raised by the Police bosses that the 'Value System' of the two services is very different. That the people from the defense are too straight and upright and find it tough to fit in.
If you were a bit elderly, you were always advised to stay on at your fields and tend to them. Some seniors were co-opted to take part in panel discussions but were placed there to strictly parrot out the official version of the ruling dispensation. Asking for your legitimate rights was thus 'quantified' as an unbecoming conduct not 'behoving' a Soldier. Not to talk about money was taught to everyone while in the Service and the 'panelists' wanted the same to continue even post retirement.
The question that 'Should the soldiers fade away on retirement and must never be heard or seen' (as a collective), thus gains legitimacy.
The people today are much better informed and understand their life priorities clearly. They are 'chips of the same block' and vividly understand how the definitions have been changing over the years. The awareness levels and the advent of the social media have all but broken the old adage of that 'Fade Away' thingy.
People have become assertive, understand how they are getting shortchanged and are clear also about some good being done to them by their own Collectives/Associations.
Truthfully, there is No need to fade away AND WE SHOULD NOT.
The men who were earlier in uniform are a very great asset even after retirement because they carry with them experience which can benefit the society tremendously. If the State can channelize this asset, then so be it. But if they are left to fend for themselves, then the Service needs to step in and help these highly motivated and trained people to find their second calling.
The individual initiative will, of course, always win.
But there is 'No Fading Away' now. This country belongs to us and the Soldiers, no more in uniform, must decide to 'Live for this great Nation'.

Well BUT Why !
"They Should Not !"
"They Should Not !"
Years ago when we
joined the Service, we were fed on the clichés like
' Theirs not to question why!
They are to do or die!', or
How the six hundred of the cavalry charged into the enemy and each one of them died because they 'were dying for their country'. Many a poet was commissioned by the then masters to write poetry which would galvanize the young people in the Forces not to think about their own safety and feel pride in getting killed in the
